Captain Robert J. Akin: Experience
Captain Akin began his 30 years on the water  in 1976, by developing his boat handling skills onboard his family's first boat, a 14' game fisher.  The family fleet  progressed to a 17' Mako and then a 36' 1948 Hinckley motorboat.  At the age of 14, He began his professional maritime career as mate on the Charter boat fleet of Barnstable Harbor.  Captain Akin enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1989. As a Boatswains Mate.  He was stationed on the Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba and at Coast Guard Station Chatham, Ma.  At Station Chatham, He stood duty as Officer of the Day and Coxswain (Boat Operator) on the 44' Motor Life Boat, 28' Lecompte, 30' SRB, and 41' UTB performing search and rescue missions on the waters off of Cape Cod.   Captain Akin attended the 44 MLB Heavy Weather School at Cape Disappointment in Washington State, and the 41 UTB Coxswain C School in Yorktown, Va. He was Honorably discharged from U.S. Coast Guard in 1998, to become a member of a Massachusetts Environmental Police.   He was assigned to the regional office out of Boston, MA.  Patrolling Boston Harbor, Captain Akin was tasked with Boating Safety Education, Marine fisheries enforcement, and post 9/11 homeland security patrols.  He is a founding member of the agency's Boat Operations And Tactics training team, providing training to new officers and outside agencies in boat handling, jet ski operation and surf rescue.  In 2002 Captain Akin was the recipient of the George Hannah award for Lifesaving  for duties performed as a Police Officer.
